The Court

In 1980 I acquired a block of land which was part of Melbourne’s oldest golf clubs Riverdale G.C.   My wife Jo & I were both keen Squash players, the game was booming and getting court time was difficult, so our new home had to have a Squash court. Had problems with local planning authorities and one particularly negative neighbour but Jo had a brilliant design which involved building the court 1st and wrapping the house around it, all to the amazement of the golfers walking down the fairway.

I’ve been fortunate that many of Australia’s great squash players have been generous with their time &  donations of memorabilia. Notable visitors include Vic,Geoff & Bill Hunt, Vicki Cardwell, Sarah & Judy Fitz-Gerald, Nicol David, Anthony Ricketts, Ong Ben Hee

Its been the scene of many varied games and social functions and some memorable Kooyong Tennis Club matches against Royal South Yarra and Vic Hunts old club, Sandringham as pictures of the after match refreshments attest.

After 33 years, the court has attained a marvellous patina made from balls, the dreaded black graphite racket marks, rivers of sweat, and the odd splash of blood
